An archaeological assessment of a proposed residential development was carried out at Castle Hill, Carlingford, Co. Louth, on 4 August 1999. The site is within the medieval town of Carlingford, close to King John's Castle and the line of the town wall.
Three test-trenches were excavated on the site using a mechanigal digger with a 3ft bucket. The trenches excavated revealed only modern garden soil covering the natural subsoil. No archaeological features were revealed in any of the trenches, and no finds of archaeological interest were recovered. No further archaeological excavation is therefore necessary at the site.
