An assessment of a proposed development involving the construction of a mews house and a terraced house was carried out at Castle Hill, Carlingford, Co. Louth. The site is to the west of Newry Street, inside the line of the town wall.
Two trenches were excavated. The first, at the north end of the site, consisted of topsoil above natural gravel, which was exposed at a depth of 0.15m below the surface. The second was excavated at the south end of the site in an area where the ground has been made up and is 1.5m above road level. Two walls of relatively recent date (18th–20th century) were exposed in the trench and were cut into a post-medieval deposit. This layer extended to a depth of 2.2m and overlay the natural gravel. To the north of these walls a brown, loamy soil containing stones and shell was evident at a depth of 1.5m. This deposit almost certainly represented a former garden soil, but no finds were present that could help to date it. Natural gravel was exposed at a depth of 2m in this area.
As the proposed mews house was not to impinge on the garden soil, no further work was necessary.
