The pit came to attention during monitoring of machine clearance for the construction of the Ardee link road. Two flints were recovered at the base of the topsoil.
The pit was subrectangular, 1.75m x 1.4m and 0.2m deep. The fill was burnt stones, many of sandstone, c. 0.15m across, angular and most often fairly flat, comprising 80% of the material. In the interstices was black clay and some charcoal, which was sampled.
Examination of the surrounding area revealed no further archaeological evidence. Numerous fulacht fiadh-type sites, large and small, were identified during monitoring of the Ardee link road and have been excavated; the full conclusions are not yet clear.
