This work was carried out on 16 February 1999 before construction of a local authority housing development. The site was on the west side of the Shannon River, fronting the northern side of the old road, Thomondgate, leading to Thomond Bridge. It was not included in the zone of archaeological potential as defined by the Urban Archaeological Survey. It was, however, included within the area defined on the Recorded Monuments Map. The area measured 7.5m north-south by 22m. The site sloped down from west-east.
Three cuttings were made. No archaeological features, deposits or finds were identified in any of them. It seemed that the previous buildings, constructed in the 19th century, were put directly on the natural gravel, which occurred at 0.5–0.7m below the present ground level. The looseness of this natural deposit implied that it was never subject to any significant load-bearing pressure or interference.
