Testing was undertaken before the construction of a residential dwelling at Mill Street, Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny. The site of the development is immediately to the south-east of the centre of Thomastown, fronting the National Primary Route linking Waterford to Dublin and on the east bank of the River Nore. It is to the south-east of the walled town and to the periphery of the zone of archaeological potential as defined by the Urban Archaeological Survey.
Four test-trenches were opened on the site. Two were opened in 1998 (Excavations 1998, 124), and two in 1999. The trenches were opened with great difficulty, as much of the site had been infilled with building debris and rubble and it is on the east bank of the river, which flows c. 8m beneath.
The building debris extended to a depth of 3m in the trenches opened. It was not possible to excavate beneath the 3m level in the two trenches opened in 1998. The two trenches opened in 1999 extended to depths of between 3.5m and 4m. However, no archaeological remains were uncovered between the 3m level, the base of the infilled rubble material, and the limit of the excavation in both trenches.
