Monitoring and test excavation were carried out on the Smithwicks Brewery Fermentor Block Expansion Stage VIII. The test excavation was within the precincts of St Francis's Abbey and adjacent to the military barracks established at the site at the beginning of the 18th century.
The test excavation revealed a deposit model that mirrored earlier phases of work by the writer (Excavations 1997, 105, 97E0099) and by Margaret Gowen (Excavations 1996, 58, 95E0242, and Excavations 1998, 123, 98E0069). A thin layer of gravel was identified over boulder clay. This was overlain by a layer of soft, silty, organic material that has consistently produced occasional post-medieval finds, such as red brick and pottery. The layer appears to have accumulated naturally from the early post-medieval period. It directly underlies a mortar layer representing barracks activity. The monitoring confirmed the archaeological profile established during the test excavation.
