Excavation was undertaken before the construction of an extension to the rear of 26 Patrick Street, Kilkenny. The site is within the area of the medieval walled city.
The excavation uncovered the foundations of a post-medieval building and a number of medieval features to the west of its foundations. A trench, 20m by 13m, was excavated. Five medieval pits, which varied in size, were excavated in the western section of the site. The average pit measured 1.2m north-south by 1.85m by 0.4m deep and contained one or two fills. The most substantial pit measured 1.8m north-south by 3.5m by 1m deep and contained twelve fills. The fills included the bones of sheep, cattle and pig, medieval pottery sherds and oyster shells. Two pin fragments were also recovered. The pits most likely served as refuse pits, and the faunal remains recovered from them would support this. They occur in the area of the medieval burgage plots.
A linear feature, possibly a ditch, measuring 4.6m north-south by 0.9m by 0.7m deep, was found to the west of the wall foundations. It contained the bones of cattle, sheep, pig and horse and sherds of pottery.
The basal layers of a number of post-medieval red brick and limestone walls were recorded in the eastern section of the trench. There were a number of pits associated with the walls.
