Three test-trenches were excavated in the site of Statham's Garage in Patrick Street, Kilkenny, to comply with a request from Kilkenny Corporation before a grant of planning. The proposed development site is on the eastern side of Patrick Street within the zone of archaeological potential for Kilkenny City. The site is vacant at present. The 18th-century cartographers John Rocque and Samuel Byron illustrate a large building fronting onto Patrick Street on this site.
The trenches were opened on the footprint of the foundations of the proposed development. Trench 1 was T-shaped in plan and measured 7m north-south by 6m. Eight pits were recorded cutting the subsoil. Trench 2 measured 7m east-west by 2m. A ditch aligned east-west was recorded cutting the subsoil. Trench 3 measured 6m east-west by 2m. Two possible pits were recorded cutting the subsoil. The stratigraphy in the trenches was planned and recorded. No archaeological excavation took place.
