The site is on Green Street, Kilkenny, just to the north of the city centre in the area known as Irishtown, only 45m from the River Nore.

Pre-construction testing was carried out before the construction of three dwelling-houses and associated site works. Five test-trenches were opened on the site, on the imprint of the proposed development.

Archaeological deposits were uncovered 1m below ground level, occurring at levels of between 44.2m and 44.5m OD. The upper deposits were of post-medieval date. The deposits at the lower levels may have been of medieval date. They occurred at levels of between 43.3m and 43.5m OD. They consisted of dark, organic-rich material and appeared to be built-up dumped deposits. The inclusions in the dark, heavy and organic-smelling deposits included charcoal, small pieces of wood, decayed vegetable matter, animal bedding and waste, and the occasional fragmented animal bone. No datable finds were recovered to conclusively date the lower deposits. However, they were sealed by deposits of post-medieval date.

The archaeological deposits were left in situ, and it was recommended that a raft foundation be used to preserve the deposits below the 1m level.
