The proposed development site comprises a mill on Green Street with some associated buildings and a large garden to the rear. It is proposed to refurbish the mill and an associated house and to build apartments in the garden to the rear. According to the Urban Archaeological Survey for Kilkenny, the line of the city wall ran through the site under the rear wall of the mill. The garden area lies outside the city wall.
Thirteen test-trenches were opened in February 1999. One trench was opened on the line of the city wall to a depth of 1.4m, and no evidence for the wall was found. The other trenches were opened in the garden area on the footprint of the proposed building. Garden soil was removed to a depth 1.5m, and below this was natural, light brown clay.
Nothing of an archaeological nature was noted.
