Excavations for the foundations of a building in the south-west corner of a development site on Friary Road, Naas, proceeded in early 1999. Testing and an earlier phase of monitoring had been carried out the previous year (Excavations 1998, 110).
Two features were noted during monitoring in this area. Feature A was originally revealed during test-trenching as a rectangular deposit of layers of red and yellow ash mixed with burnt clay, measuring 1.5m north-south by 0.5m deep. The excavation of the foundation trench revealed a maximum east-west dimension for this feature of 1.3m.
Feature B extended for a distance of 3.2m along the southern foundation trench in this area. It consisted of a layer of burnt red/orange clay 0.05–0.14m thick, over a layer of black, charred material 0.1–0.23m thick. This lay directly upon the natural gravels. The natural did not show any indication of burning. The entire feature was covered by 0.7m of gravel fill containing inclusions of red brick. Both features are probably associated with early modern domestic structures that stood on the site.
