An archaeological evaluation was undertaken at a proposed development site to the rear of The Moat Club, Abbey Street, Naas. The work was carried out in compliance with a request from the National Monuments and Historic Properties Service and Naas Urban District Council, following a pre-planning enquiry. The site is within the boundaries of the urban area of archaeological potential for Naas and in the immediate environs of the motte.
Two trenches were mechanically excavated. No finds of archaeological interest were recovered during the testing. However, two walls were revealed. One was relatively modern, being of shuttered concrete construction, and it appeared to have formed part of a building block associated with former school buildings on the site. The other wall appears to be of 19th-century date and is illustrated in a plan of the site dating to 1872.
The natural subsoil was found to slope down to the east and south, reflective of the existing topography of the area as a whole.
No features, structures or artefacts of historical or archaeological interest were recovered during the work, and therefore it was recommended that no further archaeological involvement was required at the site.
