An archaeological evaluation was undertaken at a proposed development site at the rear of Round Tower House, Dublin Street, Kildare, on 8 May 1999. The site is within the designated zone of archaeological potential associated with Kildare town.
The mechanical excavation of two trenches took place within the confines of the proposed apartment complex, carpark and associated access road, all of which will be constructed during Phase 1 of the development.
The results of the trenching indicated that the site had been levelled up sometime in the past, probably during the late 19th/early 20th century. The fill used in this procedure appears to have been dumped directly upon the original topsoil, which, in turn, lay directly upon the natural sterile subsoil. No features, deposits or finds of archaeological interest were uncovered during the work.
Further investigations will be undertaken in 2000 following the demolition of buildings fronting onto Dublin Street.
