Testing was carried out before the extension of an existing 19th-century two-storey cottage, the foundations of which were expected to be dug to a depth of 0.8m. The site is within the Celbridge zone of archaeological potential and is relatively close to the Early Christian foundation of St Mochua, the enclosure of which is less than 100m to the west. While the modern Ordnance Survey maps suggest that the site is just to the east of the enclosure (as evidenced in the pronounced curve on Church Road), the 1939 edition suggests an outer enclosure to the south-east of the church, now built upon. A projection of this line to the north would bisect the proposed development.
Two trenches were opened by hand along the extent of the new walls. Both trenches encountered bedrock that dipped from between 0.25m and 0.68m below the surface, which was sealed by 19th-century deposits.
