Monitoring was carried out during the excavation of the pipeline trenches required by An Bord Gáis for the Athy–Stradbally–Portlaoise Feeder Main on the L109 (between Athy and Stradbally) and the T16 (between Stradbally and Portlaoise). The trenches for the feeder main were opened along the public roadway and the road verge from the northern perimeter of Athy, through Stradbally and terminating on the eastern side of Portlaoise—a total length of c. 27km. No archaeological features or artefacts came to light during mechanical excavation of the pipeline trench. A number of subsidiary gas-pipe trenches in certain streets in Athy town were also monitored; no material of archaeological interest was noted.
