Planning permission to construct a dwelling-house at Knockanish West, The Spa, Tralee, included a condition that pre-development archaeological testing was necessary as the development incorporated a site classified in the RMP as 'unclassified earthwork'. Testing was conducted to determine the nature of a raised area within the site of the development.
A test-trench 13m by 2m was excavated at the southern side of the raised, circular area. A stratum consisting of 70% fractured, coarse limestone pebbles and a stratum containing beach pebbles, fractured limestone, shells and fragments of brick were encountered. This material suggests that spoil from the now-destroyed brick kiln immediately east of the development was dumped in this area. There was no evidence that the raised area was archaeological in nature. No archaeological stratigraphy, features or artefacts were recorded within the area of the test-trench.
