Planning permission was granted for a small extension to the Ardfert Community Centre, which is across the road from the major ecclesiastical site that contains Ardfert Cathedral and two other extant churches. Monitoring of an earlier extension had taken place in 1997 (Excavations 1997, 79–80).
The work was carried out on 15 November 1999. Six pits for roof supports were opened. Although all were dug to a depth of c. 1m, only one reached boulder clay. No features and only modern finds were noted.
