Test-trenches were excavated to the east of the Cannahowna River to comply with a planning condition. Gort Mart was in the southern section of the development site.
Eight trenches were excavated in the footprint of the foundations of a hotel, houses and a carpark. Trenches 1–4 were excavated in the area of the disused mart. A riverine deposit was recorded overlying the clay subsoil. Trenches 5–8 were excavated in the northern section of the site. This area has been extensively infilled in recent years by the County Council. Ground level has been raised by c. 6m in the northern corner of the site.
No archaeological stratigraphy was recorded in any of the trenches, and no artefacts were recovered.
