The proposed development involved the alteration and extension of the premises to accommodate a retail outlet. The site is within the town wall of medieval Galway and falls within the zone of archaeological potential. Test excavations undertaken in July involved the excavation of three trenches in the area of the proposed extension.
A black, humic layer was uncovered in all three trenches. This layer contained inclusions of oyster shells and was 0.3m to 1.5m deep overlying the natural, yellow/grey boulder clay.
While no features or artefacts of archaeological significance were uncovered during testing, it was recommended that the boring of the piled foundations be monitored.
