The site is a large expanse of land at the east side of Saggart village. Construction of a golf-course over most of the area is now complete, and the developer intends to construct several areas of golf houses. The site was visited on 8 and 9 September 1999, and test excavation was undertaken from 18 to 20 October 1999, using a mechanical excavator.
Construction of the golf-course was well advanced over most of the site. The site has been landscaped, with hillocks and ponds created, levelled and seeded. All earth-moving that relates to the construction of the golf-course was completed. The area of the development was walked on 9 September 1999, and the edges of drain cuttings, machine tracks and spoilheaps were cursorily examined for indicators of archaeological remains. No features or finds of archaeological interest were noted in the test-trenches. The only finds of interest—medieval pottery and flints—were recovered from the initial field-walking of the site.
Much of the topsoil had been previously removed from the site, particularly in those areas close to Saggart village, where medieval remains would be most expected.
