Seven test-trenches were opened in December 1999 and January 2000 in order to find the level of human burials in the graveyard attached to St Mary's Church. The church was built between 1697 and 1702, and the earliest burials would appear to date from 1709.

The trenches confirmed previous results obtained by Helen Kehoe where disarticulated human remains were recorded at between 0.45m and 0.9m below the present ground level. In addition, several horizontal grave slabs were exposed and their levels recorded. One bore the inscription:
This Stone burial place
Belongeth to James Elliott U his
Posterity 1784.
