Testing was carried out in advance of proposed development and before a planning application. It is proposed to demolish the existing Massey Funeral Home, which fronts onto The Coombe, and the garage to the rear of the site. The derelict, listed Widow's House, which forms part of the site, is to be refurbished.
Three trenches were mechanically excavated in the carpark. The stratigraphy was generally uniform throughout the trenches, with less than 1m of late rubble infill noted in each. The remaining trench profile comprised loose, garden-type soils.
Trench B produced four medieval pottery sherds from 1m depth of a compact, grey deposit, which did not reveal any associated archaeological structures/ features. Natural, yellow clay was revealed on average at 2m.
There was no evidence for significant archaeological material; however, there was a notable absence of deep rubble infill deposits. Additional testing will be required should planning permission be granted.
