It is intended to extend the grounds of Dublin Zoo northwards by 30 acres (doubling its present size), incorporating part of the lands in the vicinity of Áras an Uachtaráin.

The principle works for the redevelopment of the lands consisted of excavation for foundation and animal enclosure trenches, and drainage/service trenches.

A two-phase series of test-trenching was carried out across the site; no evidence for any significant archaeological remains was encountered during testing. There were some remains of small stone drains and some late, glazed, patterned plate sherds in several trenches. A 1940s-built brick culvert, which connects the lake in the present zoo grounds with the lake in the newly developed area, and its in situ sluice mechanism were retained within the new development.
