Testing was carried out in fulfilment of planning permission for alterations to buildings at St Mary's Hospital, as the development is within an area of archaeological potential of a recorded monument (SMR 18:7). Six test-trenches were excavated; however, no features of archaeological interest were revealed. Much of the ground had been disturbed during the construction of the modern buildings at the site, as well as during the construction of the nearby chapel and garden grounds attached to the hospital, which was formerly a military school, established by the Hibernian Society in 1768.
