The site is outside the precinct of St Thomas's Abbey, in lands between the abbey and the city. Much of this ground was probably pasture and dumping ground during the medieval period. Meath Street is of 17th-century date, and St Catherine's church is a late 18th-century foundation, although the present structure dates to the mid-19th century. The large building to the south of the church, which is undergoing some renovation and extension, dates to this period. It has large cellars, which extend eastwards beyond the east wall of the return.
Foundations for the extension were excavated to a depth of c. 2.8m. Subsoil was encountered at a depth of 2.7m. The intervening ground was extensively disturbed in the 19th century, when the existing building on the site was constructed. No archaeological deposits were encountered.
