The present building is to be refurbished. As part of these works, it is proposed to reduce the depth of the existing basement level by 0.4m.
Six trenches were excavated by machine in the area of proposed ground reduction. The stratigraphy of all the trenches was generally uniform throughout the site footprint. An earthenware service pipe extended the length of the site and was encountered in Trenches C, E, and F. There was no evidence for archaeological structures or features within the trenches opened. Two sherds of post-medieval pottery and a clay pipe stem were recovered in Trench C.
Redeposited late infill and the ceramic pipe insertion east-west through the site indicated extensive late intrusion. Sandy natural was revealed at 2m on average throughout the site.
