Before the redevelopment of the site an archaeological assessment involved the excavation of four trenches opened by mechanical excavator. The total footprint of the existing building to be redeveloped is 18m by 7m. Number 4 Dame Lane is situated parallel to Dame Street, on its southern side. Dame Street derives its name from a dam built across the Poddle to provide water-power for milling.
From the evidence of the test-trenches the site area appeared to have been filled with 18th-century blackstone/red brick basements. The infill within and outside of these basement remains was post-medieval, and excavation for the building went down to the natural clay.
There was no evidence for any significant archaeological soils or features. Two ceramic plate remains were of 19th-century date.
