Two test-trenches were mechanically excavated at an existing basement level 2.2m below present street level. There was an overall uniformity of stratigraphy throughout the site, consisting of a rubble infill layer that overlay the 18th-century black, organic refuse material. This deposit was revealed mainly in the western side of the site for a depth of c. 0.4m and included 18th-century ceramics, clay pipe stem and shell.
A small, cellar-like feature adjacent to the western boundary wall of the site appeared to form part of an original 18th-century basement.
No other archaeological features or deposits were revealed during the monitoring of the underpinning or general excavation of the site area.
