Two test-trenches were excavated at the site before an application for planning permission in order to establish whether archaeological stratigraphy existed in the development area. The site forms part of the back garden to 16 South Main Street and lies in the south-western corner of the Base Town, a medieval suburb of Youghal. The site is bounded on the south and west by the line of the town wall.
There were no traces of any archaeological remains uncovered in either test-trench. The nature of the stratigraphy suggests that the layers represent relatively modern dumps of material.
