The site is on the North Island within the core area of the walled Anglo-Norman town. The buildings on the site are scheduled for refurbishment, and the aim of the excavation was to establish whether any archaeological remains were within the depth of 0–0.04m below the modern floor level. This depth is the maximum required in order to lay a raft foundation to the rear (east) of the existing building and the depth required to install service trenches.
The excavation showed that modern fill underlay the present floor and extended to at least 0.4m below the present ground level.
