Testing was carried out in July 1999 at the site of a proposed dwelling and two septic tanks in Tuamgraney, Co. Clare. The second septic tank was to be built behind and to service an already existing house. It was noted from the Sites and Monuments Record that the area was rich in archaeological remains: Tuamgraney church, graveyard, tower-house and cross-slab and the site of a round tower were to the north of the proposed dwelling-house site. These sites are numbered CL028:05801–05 in the Sites and Monuments Record.
Six trenches were investigated by machine. Trenches 1 and 2 were in the area of the proposed septic tank and percolation area; Trenches 3 and 4 were in the area of the proposed house; and Trenches 5 and 6 were in the area of the proposed septic tank and percolation area of the existing house.
Nothing of archaeological significance was discovered during test-trenching. A large dump of wood waste material was found in the vicinity of the proposed dwelling. It may be that this material was dumped here in recent times from the sawmill that stood to the south (G. Daly, pers. comm.) and that it obscures the well marked on the 3rd edition OS map.
