This development is associated with the Lisdoonvarna Sewerage and Sewage Disposal Scheme and is funded by Clare County Council. An assessment of the scheme identified the remains of a possible archaeological site that measured c. 16m north-south by 7m, formed a U-shaped feature and lay along the proposed access route to the new treatment works site. It will be completely destroyed by the construction of the proposed roadway. Pre-development testing was carried out to ascertain the archaeological significance of the site.
Two trenches were manually excavated, Trench A in the north and Trench B in the south of the mound. Excavations in Trench B revealed only natural marl layers with no finds. However, in Trench A removal of the sod revealed a burnt stone layer. This ran in an east-west direction for 2.3m, sloping sharply on the east and west sides. The burnt layer was recorded, and it was recommended that full excavation be carried out on the site before any future developments. It is possible that this burnt layer represents a burnt mound or fulacht fiadh.
