On 8 January 1999 archaeological testing was carried out in the environs of an enclosure (site of), at Gortatogher, Co. Clare. This work was undertaken before the laying of a gas pipeline from Limerick to the village of Parteen and on through the townland of Gortatogher. The enclosure was partially indicated by hachures on the 1842 edition OS 6-inch map but does not appear on any of the subsequent OS editions.
A house had been built on the south-eastern end of the site, and the western end was destroyed, before 1842, by the construction of the Limerick- Broadford road. Field inspection failed to identify any traces of the enclosure.
A single test-trench was inserted on the eastern side of the road, in a north-south direction, following the line of the proposed pipeline. This trench was c. 15m long x 0.5m wide x 1.2m deep. No finds, features or deposits of archaeological significance were noted.
