Trial-trenching was carried out at the site of a proposed cinema complex, incorporating office and retail units, on 20 February 1999. The work was undertaken in compliance with conditions attached to the grant of planning in respect of the proposed development. The development is within the zone of archaeological potential for Cavan, as defined by the OPW, Urban Archaeological Survey. The site is on the western slopes of Gallows Hill, with the greater part situated in a green-field setting and the reminder an existing surface carpark.
Seven trenches, ranging from 20m to 50m long, were excavated mechanically, with the sections cleaned by hand, in order to determine the nature and extent of any possible archaeological structures or deposits within the area of development. No such features were revealed, and no material finds were recovered during the testing.
