Trial-trenching was carried out at the site of a proposed housing complex on 27 February 1999. The work was undertaken in compliance with a condition attached to the grant of planning in respect of the proposed development and following a request from NMHPS, Dúchas. The area of development is within the zone of archaeological potential for Cavan, as defined by the OPW, Urban Archaeological Survey. Before the commencement of testing, a number of outbuilding and boundary walls were demolished to ground level and all ground slabs were removed.
Six trenches, ranging from 10m to 50m long, were excavated mechanically in order to determine the nature and extent of any possible archaeological structures or deposits within the area of development. No such features were revealed, and no material finds were recovered during the testing.
