It was thought that the foundations of a 17th-century bawn, known from Plantation period documentation, may have been present on or under the site of the walled garden know as 'Drumilly Bawn'. The name was the only indication of any great antiquity. No bawn features were noted in the make-up of the present garden wall.
Excavation trenches, their position dictated by those of rare clearances in the forest, confirmed that the site was a late 18th-century walled garden, consisting of a tall inner wall, a ha-ha and a slip. No traces of earlier occupation were found.
