Larne Borough Council proposes to refurbish the harbour at Glenarm, Co. Antrim. This work will initially involve the refurbishment and reconstruction of the existing harbour piers, the dredging of the refurbished harbour and finally the rebuilding of the Glenarm River quay walls, both east and west sides, from the Cloney Bridge to the sea.

The site is within an archaeologically highly sensitive area, within the immediate vicinity of Glenarm Friary, on a small promontory overlooking Glenarm Bay.

The area investigated consists of a thin strip of land 110m long, lying along the west bank of the river, to the east of St Patrick's Church of Ireland parish church.

Ten trenches were mechanically excavated, running east-west along the length of the western bank of the Glenarm River from Cloney Bridge to the end of the existing quay. Where possible, trenches were excavated to subsoil. This testing indicated that the present bank is of modern construction, 1.4m+ deep composed of compacted stone (predominantly shattered limestone), with flint nodules, red brick, 20th-century crockery, ceramic sewer pipe and tin cans.

No significant archaeological deposits were uncovered.
