A machine-cut trench, 23m long by 2m wide and aligned approximately north-south, was excavated to subsoil to determine whether this was an archaeological or a natural feature. A band of mixed ploughsoil containing a high proportion of small to medium-sized stones and exhibiting clear signs of waterlogging was encountered 5m from the southern end of the trench at the approximate location of the cropmark. This band of stones had been laid down by plough action and does not represent archaeological activity. No archaeological features were observed, and no artefacts were recovered.
