Monitoring of foundation works associated with the construction of a block of holiday homes was undertaken on 23 December 1998. The work was carried out in compliance with a request from NMHPS, DĂșchas The Heritage Service, following the submission of an archaeological evaluation report, prepared by Clare Mullins, in respect of the development (No. 689, Excavations 1998).
Four features were uncovered during the course of the work, an earth-cut drain, a wall foundation and a soakage pit with an associated stone-lined drain. All but the latter feature had previously been identified during the course of the initial trial-trenching. No material was recovered that might aid in the dating of these features, and they may be post-medieval in origin.
One sherd of medieval pottery was recovered from the soakage pit but its association with relatively later material indicated that it was probably a stray find.
Further monitoring will take place during January 1999.
