Archaeological monitoring of the Wexford Main Drainage Scheme continued into early 1998.
Skeffington Street
There were no indications of archaeological material within the trench limits. The stratigraphic profile revealed estuarine deposits underlying post-medieval and early modern infill.
North Main Street
During street landscaping works (pavement setting, insertion of lamp-posts etc.) a large pit was excavated immediately to the north of No. 54 North Main Street (adjacent to the property boundary with No. 58). This lay 0.57m from the shop frontage and extended into the street for a distance of 0.84m. Archaeological stratigraphy was recorded at c. 1.26m below the path surface. This consisted of an organic silt layer underlying a mixed deposit of gravel, shell and sand. The profile is consistent with previous results for this street, which indicate that during the medieval period the area was sea front and subject to tidal inundation.
The Bullring
Alterations to the square at The Bullring (insertion of paving, benches etc.) and remedial work on the existing sewer line revealed no archaeological material.
