This development was a continuation of site works that commenced in January 1996. As The Faythe lies within the zone of archaeological importance for the town of Wexford the site was tested in accordance with the planning directive. In 1996 sixteen pits were opened. There were no indications of archaeological material.
The street frontage was unavailable for testing owing to the presence of standing buildings, consequently in January 1998 an extension to the licence was obtained to monitor the insertion of service trenches. Two distinct horizons were present. A rubble and silt fill overlay a basal layer of naturally deposited sand. The fill had been introduced in order to level the site, the original contours of which sloped downwards from east to west.
