The initial assessment of the site was undertaken in 1997 and revealed nothing of archaeological significance (Excavations 1997, 191). An additional block of apartments was to be built at the north-west corner of the site. This area was assessed in May 1998.

Five trenches were opened with a mechanical excavator. These revealed the demolished remains of a 19th-century water-powered cornmill, which is shown on the 1st edition of the OS map of the area. No evidence of any activity of an earlier date was uncovered.
