Beginning in August 1998, monitoring work was carried out on the route of the Nenagh Bypass, Co. Tipperary, initially by Cia McConway and Paul Logue and from 30 August by this writer. Large-scale monitoring of the route was completed by the start of October 1998, although monitoring of a number of peripheral roads was undertaken again in December 1998 and March 1999. Excavations continued in tandem with the monitoring work and are ongoing at the time of writing. Ciara McManus was the assistant director at Lahesseragh Sites A and C (Nos 609 and 611, Excavations 1998), Knockalton Lower (No. 605, Excavations 1998) and Tullahedy Sites E and F.
Further possible archaeological features found during monitoring were investigated in the townlands of Ballintotty, Benedine, Clashnevin, Knockalton Lower, Lahesseragh and Tyone. These features generally consisted of single, isolated pits/fire spots of indeterminate date and function.
