Cropmarks recorded by the Geological Survey in a field at Coolbaun, Cooleagh, were checked in advance of proposed development of the land. It was clear from three long test-trenches (3m x c. 80m) that the cropmarks represented periglacial features and natural drainage. There was no indication that the land had been culti-vated before the early 19th century. Part of a fulacht fiadh was intercepted, and two further trenches were cut into neighbouring hillocks in the hope of uncovering fulachta fiadh mounds intact. Both hillocks were part of the natural topography.
