As a result of the recommendations of an archaeological assessment carried out by Audrey Gahan during May 1998 (No. 578, Excavations 1998) this writer was requested to monitor the digging of foundation trenches and associated services for a proposed apartment development at a site at Abbey Street Lower, Sligo, close to the medieval Holy Cross Abbey. This work was carried out on 10 June 1998.

On arrival at site it was observed that the greater part of it had already had foundations excavated and filled with concrete. This appeared to have happened subsequent to the archaeological assessment. Of the portion of the site where ground disturbance had not taken place, no significant archaeological deposits were observed during the monitoring. Stratigraphy consisted of post-medieval build-up layers and house remains.
