This project consisted of the improvement of the existing roadway, provision of a new road, foul and water drainage and general landscaping at Enterprise Park, Sligo Regional Airport, Strandhill, Co. Sligo.
During the course of monitoring of ground disturbance a shell midden was revealed in one of the trenches in the east of the site. It was uncovered at a depth of 1m below ground level and was 2.2m long, 1.7m wide and 0.25m deep. It consisted of a black, gritty sand layer with inclusions of cockle and oyster shell, as well as occasional charcoal inclusions. This layer came down onto a burnt, red, sandy layer, 0.1m deep. Underlying this layer was a grey, natural sand. It should be noted that the shell midden was only uncovered for a length of 2.2m but extends further north beyond the limit of the trench.
