In July 1998 human remains were discovered during dredging operations in the Carrow River at Carrownaglearagh, near Elphin, Co. Roscommon.235 The remains consisted of a skull and a number of other human bones. These were removed by the Garda who visited the site and searched for remaining bones. The skull was brought to the local doctor, who pronounced it to be that of a female. The site was then reported to the National Museum and the remains (1998:88) were acquired (Fredengren, forthcoming). In 1996 a human skull was also found here during drainage works (1996:34).
