Monitoring associated with the Castleblaney Urban Water Supply Scheme was carried out from October to December 1998. The scheme is an extension to the existing Lough Eglish Regional Water Supply Scheme. It involved the laying underground of a pipeline running in a general north-east direction from Tossy Cross, c. 8km south-south-west of Castleblaney, towards the town, where it turned in a general north-westerly direction to a termination point on the Monaghan Road, adjacent to Corracloghan House. Furthermore, a water reservoir was constructed at Connabury Td, on the southern side of Castleblaney town, adjacent to the existing reservoir. This was linked to the new main water pipe by means of an extension/spur line running in a general westerly direction from the reservoir site. In all, c. 10km of pipeline was involved, as well as groundworks associated with the reservoir site.

A 10m-wide way-leave existed along the length of the pipeline in all green-field areas (c. 7km). Sections of the pipeline route were laid along the existing roadways and roadway grass verges. Continuous monitoring of topsoil-stripping was undertaken in all green-field areas, while trench excavations along the existing roads were monitored on an occasional basis.

No features, deposits or finds of archaeological interest were uncovered during the course of the work.
