A gas main was laid from north to south through the town, partly in an open-cut trench and partly by boring between cuttings. Over most of the area the road surface had been laid directly upon the boulder clay. At two points disturbed deposits up to 1.25m deep were found, containing fragments of shell, charcoal and animal bone. No artefacts were found.
