This assessment took place in advance of a proposed residential development on Main Street, Drumconrath. The site lies in a zone of archaeological interest owing to the proximity of a medieval church site and two mottes, as well as being the location of a former borough.
Three test-trenches were excavated within the site. Trench 1, 7m long, revealed yellow boulder clay at 0.3m, above which were layers of hard-core and sand. The second trench was the same length and was excavated to 1m deep. It consisted of natural boulder clay underlying sand and hard-core at 0.2m. A few large stones, up to 0.2m in diameter, sitting on the boulder clay, may represent a cobbled surface. The third trench was 4m long and consisted of brown loam producing modern artefacts lying over boulder clay. This may have been a result of the construction of a lounge for the nearby public house.
